    Superfoods 101 & Giveaway: Cacao, Maca and Bee Pollen!

    What are superfoods?

    When you read a blog, turn on the news or flip through a magazine nowadays, you’ll hear about Superfoods. But what is a “Superfood” and how does it nourish your body?

    Superfoods are foods that have extraordinary amounts of nutrients per calorie. For example, when you eat superfoods, you are getting more minerals, vitamins and antioxidants from one bite than you would from ten bites of a non-superfood.

    Superfoods are recommended for anyone, but especially those who have health challenges because their high mineral content fuels your body’s energy production, while the high antioxidant, essential fatty acid, protein and vitamin contents repair damaged tissue.

    The easiest and quickest way to begin incorporating these foods into your diet is to add them to smoothies.

    Some of our favorite superfoods:

    Bee Pollen
    Bee pollen is a significant source of carbohydrates, proteins and minerals. Eaten raw (unheated), it contains enzymes, which can aid in the digestion of carbohydrates. We recommend bee pollen for its track record with increasing energy levels. Use caution if you suspect you have allergies to bee products or pollen. Enter to win Bee Pollen below!

    Spirulina
    Dried, powdered spirulina is one of our favorite superfoods. It is a complete protein and contains b vitamins, antioxidants, vitamin c and trace minerals such as iron, magnesium and selenium. For vegetarians out there, it is a superior source of protein than legumes, in terms of amino acid (protein) content.

    Maca Root
    This is a root vegetable containing a very high content of minerals including calcium, potassium, iron and iodine. It contains 19 amino acids and is said to improve libido and fertility due to its nutritional value. Enter to win Maca Powder below!

    Hemp Seeds
    Hemp seeds contain all 9 essential amino acids (proteins) and all 21 known amino acids. Hemp is also a superior source of essential fatty acids, including omega 3.

    Cinnamon, Clove and Nutmeg
    Many spices are “off the charts” when it comes to antioxidant count per serving. Cinnamon, clove and nutmeg are particularly rich in antioxidants and they taste great in smoothies. Turmeric is another spice with amazing anti-inflammatory and healing properties.

    Raw Cacao
    Cacao is another favorite of mine. Cacao is chocolate is its raw, unprocessed form. It contains theobromine which encourages a healthy balance of bacteria in the mouth, speeds up metabolism and boosts energy. It’s also high in antioxidants, fiber and magnesium, and boosts serotonin levels. Enter to win Raw Cacao below!

    Goji Berries
    Goji berries are the most nutritionally rich berry-fruit on the planet. The goji berry boosts immune function, increases alkalinity, and delivers anti-aging compounds. They are a complete protein source and contain all 8 essential amino acids.

    Coconuts
    Coconuts and their various products such as coconut meat, coconut oil, and coconut water contain numerous health benefits such as improving digestion, increasing metabolism and assisting with weight loss as well as regulating healthy hormone production. Coconuts also contain antiviral, antifungal, and antimicrobial fatty acids helping to naturally fight off viruses and bacteria.

    Both of these fruits are extremely high in vitamin C (many times more than citrus fruits) and they also contain B vitamins and antioxidants (like flavonoids and carotenoids). They are usually sold in powder form.

    Where do I find these foods?

    Your local health food store or even the grocery store may contain some of the more popular superfoods like Coconut products, Raw Cacao or Goji Berries, but I like to shop Amazon and Vitacost to save money as they are usually cheaper there.

      My favorite superfoods are goji berries, maca, medicinal mushrooms and others. I use them in various combinations in smoothies.

      Spirulina, hemp seeds, and cinnamon are my favorites! Spirulina in smoothies, hemp seeds and cinnamon on yogurt!
