Why Regenerative Agriculture Is Our Best Hope To Heal Our Planet and Our Health

One of our upcoming TBYH Conference speakers is Kyle Garner, the CEO of Organic India, a company creating a demand for organic ingredients in an area of the world that has greatly suffered from GMO seed manufacturers.

Organic India makes quality herbal teas, supplements and personal products based on the principles of Ayurvedic medicine.

We are really honored to be working with them for many, many reasons, especially their commitment to support natural sustainable organic agriculture practices that serve, honor and protect Mother Nature, and to support the livelihood and well-being of farmers and tribal wild crafters in rural India.

What will you be teaching at Take Back Your Health DC?

I will be discussing the importance of regenerative business, with a specific focus on regenerative agriculture. ORGANIC INDIA is one of several companies that are showing how businesses can change the world by focusing on leaving the planet better than we found it.

Why are you personally passionate about regenerative agriculture?

When I bought my first house, I decided I wanted to plant a vegetable garden in the yard. I had NO IDEA what I was doing, so I just started reading up on it. I was shocked at what I was learning about the negative impacts of ‘conventional’ agriculture.

When I learned there was a better way, I committed to it personally. Thankfully for me, 15 years later, I was able to tie it into my professional life by joining ORGANIC INDIA.

What are a few ways someone reading this can support regenerative agriculture in their day-to-day lives?

First and foremost, vote with your wallet. I really believe change will start with consumer demanding better. The easiest way to begin is by buying Organic as much as possible. Organic food is not only healthier to eat, it is also better for the planet.

Most regenerative agriculture efforts begin by implementing organic practices, so the more demand there is for organic food, the more land will be converted. If possible, get to know your farmer. If you can see how your food is being produced, you can make better decisions on what to buy.

Secondly, educate yourself. There are tons of great resources from organizations that are committed to regenerative agriculture. Two of my favorites are the Rodale Institute and Kiss the Ground. Both are strong advocates for sharing the science behind the benefits of regenerative organic agriculture.

What advice do you have for someone who is just beginning a healthy lifestyle?

There is nothing wrong with crawling first, and then walking before you start to run! Not many people can simply flip a switch and change everything about the way they eat and live.

If you try to jump to perfection, you will likely get overwhelmed and end up failing. For example, with your diet, it is easier to start by changing a couple meals per week than to change 21 meals per week. You can always build over time.

Additionally, pick the categories where it matters most to convert to organic. The Environmental Working Group has shared the “Dirty Dozen” foods to avoid based on high levels of pesticide residue. Start there, and then expand as budget and time allows.

What are you looking forward to at Take Back Your Health DC?

I was fortunate enough to speak at the LA conference in 2016 and left so energized by the passion of the people in the room. I’m pretty sure I got more from the people I spoke with than the people got from me! I find it a great forum to meet people that are all committed to improving their health and also the health of the planet. I can’t wait to be a part of it again.
