How To Feed Your Baby Probiotics

How To Feed Your Baby Probiotics

Being a bit of a nutrition geek, I started researching how to feed a baby well before I had even met my mate! I have been waiting to feed my baby healthy probiotic foods for a long time.

When Olivia arrived, it turned out that I was a little nervous to start – she seemed so tiny and vulnerable! I found that I didn’t want to give her anything but breast milk. But, I quickly snapped out of it and started sauerkraut juice and coconut water kefir within weeks.

In this video you’ll see me:

    1. Show you how to feed your baby probiotic-rich foods like kefir and sauerkraut

Why would you feed your baby probiotics?

There are a couple of scenarios in which it’s a good idea to feed your baby probiotics in order to protect their long-term health:

    • In the case of Caesarean birth, to inoculate the baby’s body with beneficial microflora
    • In the case of a mother with chronic illness, to grow healthy beyond the limits of her compromised microbiome
    • In the case of a mother with a history of birth control, steroids, antibiotics or the Standard American Diet
    • In colicky babies, to promote good digestion
    • In babies who catch colds and other childhood illnesses easily, to support a robust immune system

For those of you who (like me) want your babies to be “super babies”, then you’ll probably want to feed them probiotics regardless of whether you fit into a category above!

After all, these raw, fermented foods are a natural and traditional part of the human diet. It’s only in recent history that we’ve stopped consuming them regularly with each meal.

Including wild ferments into the diet from an early age will promote a robust microbiome for life!

    What You’ll Need:

10 ml syringe, or small spoon
Coconut Water Kefir and/or Sauerkraut Juice

When she was an infant, I would simply fill the syringe with 1-2 milliliters of the liquid, and slowly squirt it into her mouth as she sucked on the syringe. I increased the dose as she aged.

In my opinion, you can give up to 10 ml every day, once they are about 1-2 months old, and more if they like it!

I now put a couple teaspoons into her water bottles and foods. Soon I’ll start giving her other varieties of ferments as well, like water kefirs and other vegetable ferments.
