Immune Support During A Viral Outbreak

I hope you are all doing well. I have been thinking about you all this week as this viral outbreak continues to gain worldwide attention. I understand you all may be experiencing this differently, some of you doing fine, some of you uncertain, anxious or confused. It’s really important during this time to relax while also taking common sense precautions. (See below)

Some good news: this outbreak is reaching us right as winter is breaking and the sun is coming out. Let’s all hope that some vitamin D and fresh air help put an end to this outbreak a little more quickly than predicted.

Common Sense approach to the outbreak – What you can do now to stay healthy:  Eat well, get to bed early at night, relax, take immune-boosting supplements, and avoid sugar. Wash your hands, practice social distancing, stay home, lay low, relax at home and work on your taxes! 😉 Or watch movies and read… 🙂 And get outside and move! Fresh air in your lungs is very important for health. This is a good way to help our country lower the infection rate so that we do not put so much stress on our health care system. And, a good way for you to stay healthy too!

I am personally eating one raw garlic clove everyday. I am also getting some sunshine, using my sauna and taking all of my herbs and supplements.

Do not underestimate the power of adequate nutrition to protect your body from viral and bacterial infections. These habits can boost immunity immediately. For long term immunity – try the protocol below for a year and see how many times you catch a cold or virus … you’ll be amazed at how healthy you stay!

These are some of the essential nutrients and habits we use in my household to prevent the spread of pathogenic virus and bacteria. It’s not an exhaustive list, but these are my top habits:

    Vitamin A

This vitamin doesn’t get a lot of credit given its importance in immunity. “Recent clinical trials suggest that vitamin A supplementation reduces morbidity and mortality in different infectious diseases, such as measles, diarrhoeal disease, measles-related pneumonia, human immunodeficiency virus infection and malaria.” Read more here. I learned about the importance of Vitamin A during pregnancy because of its role in growth and development, but now I continue to take Cod Liver Oil regularly, and give it to my children as well. See below for the brand I use.

    Vitamin D

Vitamin D is better known. But many of us still do not have high enough blood levels. “Vitamin D deficiency predisposes children to respiratory infections. Ultraviolet radiation (either from artificial sources or from sunlight) reduces the incidence of viral respiratory infections, as does cod liver oil (which contains vitamin D). An interventional study showed that vitamin D reduces the incidence of respiratory infections in children. Read more here.

I use Rosita Cod Liver Oil for its freshness, purity and potency of Vitamin D and Vitamin A. Most brands add synthetic vitamin A and D to boost levels on the label, because it is not a good quality oil. Good Cod Liver Oil should not need to add synthetic vitamins. I also wanted to mention that beta carotene is not Vitamin A. If a vegan supplement says that it contains Vitamin A, it is a lie allowed by the FDA. Your body can only convert around 30% of beta carotene into Vitamin A, so the label is never accurate as to how much A you are getting.

    Vitamin C

Of course Vitamin C is an amazing immune support. “…scientific literature has abundant documentation of the ability of vitamin C to cure a number of viruses… vitamin C in high enough doses has already been shown to be very effective at eradicating the influenza virus, sometimes after serious complications such as encephalitis have arisen along with many other viral syndromes (Klenner, 1949; Vargas-Magne, 1963). In spite of this information, vitamin C is still not routinely utilized against this infectious disease, and none of the various forms of vitamin C are included in the formularies of nearly all US hospitals…” Read more here.

I use these two brands of Vitamin C – I prefer the natural form rather than synthetic ascorbic acid due to its questionable sources: Pure Synergy Pure Radiance C and HealthForce SuperFoods Truly Natural Vitamin C.

    Vitamin Sleep

I don’t think I need to convince you that sleep helps your body fight off infections 😉 But here’s a reminder: Try to get at least 7-8 hours a night to support your immune system and allow for healing. This is a great article with tips to help you get more sleep: Mastering the Mystery of Sleep.

    Probiotics

A plethora of beneficial bacteria will help keep your microbiome in balance – keeping pathogenic viral and bacterial loads low. I like these brands of supplemental probiotics. Just Thrive Probiotics and Hyperbiotics

    Essential OIls

I started using essential oils (primarily Thieves and Frankincense) on my neck when I was traveling back and forth almost monthly for events. I never caught a cold or bug from a plane ride. Now I rub it on my children’s feet, highly diluted, during the winter. I also diffuse essential oils in the home when we’ve been exposed to someone with an infection. My go-to oil blend for immunity and antiviral action is Thieves.

    Garlic Clove

I am chewing and swallowing one garlic clove (diced) a day during this acute outbreak. With its antiviral and antimicrobial properties, garlic is a good way to shorten a respiratory illness during any time of year.

    Reduce Sugar

Limit your sugar intake – it acts as an immunosuppressant. Use stevia if you must have the sugar taste. Even too many natural sugars like dates, maple syrup and honey and have a negative affect on immunity during an acute outbreak.

    Add Greens

Using lots of green leafy vegetables in your diet helps to make an alkaline environment where pathogens cannot survive easily.

Many people also benefit from a whole body cleanse to reset and relieve their system.

Let me know if you have questions about anything above!

    Keep taking back your health,
    Robin
